Some comic relief. I was doing a search on eBay and found something that gives a new meaning to “split bamboo rod”. Do a search for the following: “Cane Pole Bamboo Fishing Rod Wood 3 Piece 12.9 total length Vintage Rare Pole” and check out pictures and the Buy It Now price.

Yo Gen

lol - well that $125 piece does have metal ferrules of some sort. Quite a few are 12' or so - think any of them might be adaptable to Spey? Or Czech nymphing? They are about the right length.

Gotta love the tiptop guide!

"Handmade and original" is an understatement.

Whats funnier is he is asking more for the Huck Finn model than the H&I with all three tips. Check out his other auctions. Dude is from Twin Falls county. Probably picked this stuff up from an estate. Some amazing fishing in his part of the country.

Here, save yourself $80:

There's always a couple of those on fleaBay if you use either "cane" or "bamboo" as a search term.

Real rods are called split cane for a reason -- this one is not split (sometimes called "raw cane".)

Actually, if you want to split hairs and not rods, real rods are split bamboo, not split cane which is a tree palm and completely different, not a grass like bamboo.

I don't when or how the term "cane" ever became a way to describe a bamboo or split bamboo rod but people incorrectly describe them that way all time.

It would be sort of analogous to calling a graphite rod a "pencil lead" rod because pencil lead isn't graphite.

Definition #1 of "cane' in the Oxford English Dictionary:

the hollow jointed stem of a tall grass, especially bamboo or sugar cane, or the stem of a slender palm such as rattan.

I don't when or how the term "cane" .....

Tonkin cane perhaps??

Oh and the rod in original post is "split" cane albeit not in a good way :>)
