You'd be surprised how well those "junk" flies work. 😉My goal is to begin a tying adventure.
I picked up the following book.
Favorite Flies for Pennsylvania: 50 Essential Patterns from Local Experts
By: Eric Naguski
It's a great reference for patterns that are effective in PA. My new goal is to start tying patterns and try to successfully tie every pattern in the book. Some i've already done in the past, but many i've never attempted. The book is a good comprehensive look at a variety of the most popular pattens used in PA, including dries, nymphs, and streamers. It does NOT contain tying instructions, but that shouldn't be a problem with so many tying videos on the internet.
Here is a list i typed up of the patterns covered in the book and i classified each type as a general type. It includes the 50 essential patterns from the title, as well as mention of 10 notable PA classic patterns and an additional 5 non-PA classic patterns. The grand total 65 patterns. The flies are listed in the order they appear in the book.

Wish me luck, i think this might be a very ambitious goal. But a good motivation to do more tying and watch less tv.
Tying videos are great for learning from scratch or when you need a specific technique explained thoroughly, like making a parachute post or spinning deer hair, but after you understand the basic skills pictures and recipes are the way to go.I’ve learned that tying videos frequently irritate me because I have to keep stopping and starting the playback to follow along, and that I find good old written instructions more useful.
So after checking out a “pile” of tying books on archive.org, I purchased a few of the ones I found most interesting to work through:
