2025 Fly Fishing Ambitions

Same as other years... more tarpon fishing.

Ladies and fellas, I said last year that this would be an annual post, so what are your fly fishing ambitions in 2025? My ambitions are rather simple, and they are this: to slow down and cast more dry flies on the water. I also want to explore a handful of new streams.

That's it. If I do both of those things, I'll be a happy camper.

How about all of yinz' folks?

Get you out in the boat and put a little beat down on ya. 😂😁

Catch 2 fish-

North American Arctic Char on north slope or Northern Canada.

Alvord Cutthroat phenotype from OR. It’s an extinct subspecies but some are still catching the hybridized lookalikes.

The flights for the North American Arctic char are the most expensive I’ve ever encountered.

Then I can die happy and go on these leisure trips you anglers speak of.

Sounds like your obsession with catching all these different kinds of trout is turning into a chore?

The older I get the more I just thoroughly enjoy hanging out with my friends and catching a few fish. Some of my best times “fly fishing” have been on a log, bench, or porch, enjoying the stream and hanging with friends, or “spectator fishing”. Don’t get me wrong, I love to fish, but I can’t wait to do more of this this year.

I could see how such a complex endeavor, like the one Acristickid is undertaking, could be seen by some as chore like. But, I think it's a passion of his that he takes very seriously, and apparently he has the means to pursue it. I admire his determination, dedication, and drive!

There is an element of that- especially when the goal posts keep getting moved. It also is a little grating that I’ve been to many areas in the middle of nowhere and 5 years later I return for yet another discovery. That is due to more and more fish being tested and researched. There will certainly be more coming but I’d like to get to a point where I can declare I’ve caught them all. Like as of “2025” I caught them all. We’ll see got a kid going to MT state next fall. Certain to make more visits to the west.

It been a very interesting endeavor and has taken me to parts of the country, I and most would never travel.

I suspect there will also be another one- Northern European Arctic char, native brown trout, permit, tarpon. At least with those trips I can take my wife.

I think about the fish everyday (right now for example). I picture in my mind camping and fishing in a nearly treeless remote area for the extinct Alvord. It has taken years and years. Millions fish but no one has caught them all , everyone is on their own journey. Many are alike but none the same.

Your quest has taken you on interesting adventures for sure.
And worthwhile just for that
Best of luck out there.

I do have one bucket list thing that I haven't accomplished yet:
Really would like to catch large brook trout.

Have tried a few places in Maine, and not found what I want.
Maybe have to get to Labrador, or a few other spots on Canada
