What is fly tying?

I was at a reunion talking fly fishing and tying to a few fellow outdoorsmen. A bystanding listener then asked what fly tying is. My answer was it's a hobby where you take $1000 worth of materials and 100 hours of time to make $50 in fishing "lures." This doesn't quite capture the satisfaction of catching a fish on your own creation but it about sums it up.

I don’t know about that have you seen the price of flies lately? You’ve gotta be getting at least $100 worth of flies out of your $1000 worth of materials and 100 hours at the vise.
