Hurricane

Hook - Mustad 3907B #2 (or any 9xl streamer hook)
Thread - Black
Tail - 2 jungle **** body feathers
Body - Silver flat tinsel
Rib - Silver oval tinsel
Throat - 8-10 peacock sword fibers
Wing - A small bunch of red bucktail under a small bunch of white bucktail under 2 grizzly hackles

Originated by Fred Fowler

The Hurricane was designed by an Oquossoc, Maine angler named Fred Fowler. The pattern is also known as the Wonder and was used as the basis for the more celebrated Barnes Special which was developed by Dr. C. Lowell Barnes. There is enough difference in the patterns that many anglers prefer one over the other when trolling for salmon in the Rangeley Lakes

This video shows a simple way to tie in a thorax with legs on a dry fly, but the same technique can be used as well on nymphs.

Yes, that would work fine. But, the thorax would be the same color for every fly unless you dyed the fox squirrel? I do like fox squirrel.

Very cool. Can you provide a recipe and tying sequence with it? Maybe there's a video?
There's no video for this exactly, but it's really just a zonker with a wool/squirrel/deer hair head. Ingredients in order of application:

#4 B10S, small pseudo eyes, mono loop to keep the tail from fouling, bucktail, pine squirrel zonker strip, blood red ice dub dubbing ball, CDL, spey marabou, rubber legs, and head material of your choice.

I make the CDL flare out against the dubbing ball so it supports the marabou in front of it. And head material determines how fast it sinks.

Champs Special Streamer

Hook - Edgar Sealey & Sons 1762.B, #5
Thread - Black
Tail - Red floss
Body - Silver flat tinsel
Rib - Silver oval tinsel
Belly - A small bunch of white bucktail over 4-5 peacock herls
Underwing - A small bunch of yellow bucktail
Wing - 4 grizzly hackles

Originated by Frank Congdon

The pattern was designed by Mr. Frank Congdon from Middletown, Connecticut and was named
for his wife. The yellow bucktail in the underwing was sometimes substituted with 2 golden pheasant crests, so the bucktail should also be kept sparse. The pattern was given to the Weber Tackle Company.

When tying nymphs, how important do you think it is to tie in legs? I have really trouble getting the hackle fibers to sit well on small nymphs. I usually get frustrated and leave out legs when tying in the thorax on these small nymphs.
Yo! Did you send this question to the Orvis podcast?? Just heard it and reminded me of this discussion 🤣🤣

CDC soft hackle hare’s ear wet flies. I’ve been playing around using a single strand of krystal flash for the ribbing. Here’s one using gold krystal flash.

And here is a CDC soft hackle hare’s ear using pearl krystal flash for the rib.
