I want to create a fly that will move left/right under the surface. A gurgler can sometimes do left/right on the surface, but most flies just go up/down when you strip them. Anyone here have any experience abut this?

i assume you are talking about a fly that darts to the left and to the right as opposed to simply doing some body wiggling. Most things that sink horizontally level will react this way by jerking it on a slack line. a Head that catches water might help as well.

The "Drunk & Disorderly" fly has erratic motion in the water >

I would do a articulated pattern of some sort. It doesn’t dart side to side but the action is great when stripping it. You can use your rod tip to make it go side to side.

I'd really like to find a fly that has the action of a fluke...the side to side walk the dog action under the surface. Just doesn't seem to really exist. You would think it wouldn't be hard to develop but I haven't seen it!

I'd take a page out of Mr. Wilson from West Ogden, Utah and his Wilson wing pattern. Just double and turn 90 degrees. The challenge would be to ensure each feather was IDENTICAL in size and shape or you'll get a right-handed or left-handed fly.

This may be what you're looking for: Zipstick Streamer

It's certainly not a normal tie. I haven't tied or used it, but it looks like a jerkbait analog.

I have a couple that will do that. They're bass flies/salt water flies. If I strip them in fast they run relatively straight, but with a strip-pause-strip they move side to side.
This one started as a salt water fly. Tail is based on Bob Pop's Semper Flye, the body is a glorified Woolly Bugger. These days I use it for bass and chain pickerel.

This one is an updated version of the Calacasieu Pig Boat. Primarily a bass fly
