I would say women and liquor are the vises you need. Oops! wrong answer.
I like my Renzetti, I've had it for about 20 years or more, but if you get one get the lever action not the thumb screw action. I believe you've seen my vice.
Is it the griffin vice came with 2 sets of jaws and you are using the wrong jaws? Some vices come with 2 sets.

an associated question - if i bought a renzetti traveler, could i tye tube flies with an adaptor ?

Yes, you can get an adapter and tie tube flies on the renzetti
