One error I've seen newer (and some more experienced) tyers is the use of those chap stick containers on steroids that hold dubbing wax.

The error is that the tyer will expose too much wax and after a couple uses the wax ends up with lines cut into it and chunks of wax eventually end up on your tying thread or on your bench! To avoid this simply expose NO MORE than 1 thread's width of the wax. This will avoid the deeper thread cuts causing the hunks of wax on your thread. Also, your wax will last longer and be much neater to work with. And if you feel that this will not allow enough wax on your thread simply do the rabbit test - NO not a pregnancy test! Simply anchor your pre-waxed thread and cut some rabbit (or any other thin, light dubbing) fur. Wax the first inch or so, now touch the rabbit fur to the thread where the wax is and below where the wax is. Where the dubbing wax was applied, you'll see the fur sicks better.

Remember, you do not have to see the wax on the thread, if you do then you've applied too much!
