I learned this from a George Daniel videos a while back. The layover knot is not really a "knot". You can use the Orvis tippet knot or the surgeons to tie in the dropper. The idea is to measure out a tippet long enough to tie in the point fly, and use a 8-10" piece of tippet material to tie in a dropper above the point. The main line remains one solid line and the dropper is added to the rig. I've been doing this for quite some time and it works well.
