I’m going to be tying some midge nymphs. Probably with thread. Should I coat with or not? I’m considering wrapping with thread vs wire. Probably a UV thread spiraled over black, brown or red thread body.

BTW does anyone know if they make a UV fluorescent wire?

A zebra style midge nymph

Coat with what? I usually don’t coat thread midges with anything except an occasional very thin coat of SHHAN.

I was thinking about Solarz Bone Dry.

These are coated with UV resin. I don't think the resin is essential, but likely makes the fly more durable.

I don’t usually coat my midges, but it will make them more durable.

Keep coating them and you will have a Perdigon.

I don't coat zebra midges or Al's Rat. Those are my two main midge patterns.

They are both durable.

I tie at least a half dozen of every pattern I fish. If a fly comes apart after a few fish that’s just the cost of doing business. Brown trout are usually less hard on flies than wild bows as well

I tie thread midge pupas with Coats & Clark sewing thread and also versions using Ultra Wire. Both patterns literally take me about 2 minutes each at most to tie so I couldn't be bothered adding an additional step.

FWIW- It's easier and takes less time to knot on a new one if they get ragged but to be honest, fish teeth don't "F" up tiny flies...

...hemostats do!!

They aren't easy to find but if you can get your hands on the micro or match size of this type hook disgorger, your tiny thread midges will thank you! 😉
