I went to a fabric shop and bought a little gadget that you use to thread a needle. It's plastic and you slip it through the eye and pull your leader through. I got a couple of them for a couple dollars. I'm not sure it would work for really small hooks smaller than 20 but works for size 18 and larger.

The needle threader idea is a good one...

I've also used the garden variety looped floss threaders you can buy at any pharmacy or big box store for this purpose. They come in different diameters/gauges. The finest ones will work down to about a #16 fly.

They also make excellent bobbin threaders at the vise. I buy cheap bobbins in volume and the dental threaders help last longer before scoring the tube
