Teton Tioga Reel Problem

As I have fished my 7- weight more recently, I have noticed an issue with my reel. When I tighten the drag the reel handle also becomes harder to reel in my line. In the early days of owning this reel I sent it back to the company for a problem with the handle. When I reeled, the handle would unscrew and fall off! That problem has been fixed. I love this reel, so if anyone has any suggestions, I would appreciate hearing from you!

This sounds like somehow the "handing" of the reel has got reversed.

Dear riverwhy,

Bamboozle has a pretty good idea about the possibility of reeling against the drag causing the extra resistance, and I have another. Did you drop your spool and somehow knock it slightly out of round? If something is out of round even slightly it may become more difficult to wind as the drag is increased.

One easy way to check things is to pull line off the reel with the drag fully disengaged. Increase the drag and see if it becomes more difficult to strip the line. That is literally the entire purpose of the drag, to increase the resistance when a fish runs. If that happens then the retrieve is set up in the proper direction. If that doesn't happen then you have the reel drag cam set up in the opposite direction of the retrieve and you are retrieving the line against the drag.

If everything seems to be doing what you want it to do, then it is time to check the condition of the spool to see if it is causing the problem.

Regards,

Tim Murphy 🙂

I lube my bearing on a reel last year and had the same problem put it in upside down easy fix

Definitely reeling against the drag. I will look at the bearing tomorrow and report back. Either with my success or questions on how exactly to do it but it sounds pretty easy. Thanks for the responses.

No luck yet with my reel. I tried switching the little metal bracket to fit the other notch. That didn’t help. I suspect it is the bearing? Do you access that through the drag handle? Sorry but I am not very mechanically inclined and don’t want to F anything up.

memory is coming back I had a rusty bearing and it did exactly what you’re experiencing after some lube it worked maybe yours is froze up did you lube it ?

Took it to Precision and they didn’t have a clue. I reversed the line and now it works fine but I am a lefty! I just emailed Teton USA so hopefully they have an answer.

Do a search for Bill Archuleta. He serviced my Tioga about 2 years ago, not sure if he is still repairing reels.
He made some parts for me to fix a Sage 505 reel about 3 or 4 months ago. flyreels@msn is his email.
