I got out on the water today to finally test out my new streamer setup. The water was really low and clear, and it was also somewhat sunny out, so I did not expect to have any success. I just wanted to feel how it casted and I thought that if I moved any fish it would be a bonus.

So when I felt a hard thump and my rod doubled over, I couldn’t believe it. For a second I thought I had my pb on the end of the line. Then I got it close enough to get a look at it, and it turned out to be a 16.5 inch fallfish, who had chased a circus peanut up from the bottom and absolutely crushed it.

I would be lying if I said I wasn’t a little disappointed 😂. Nothing looks more like a big brown than a giant fallfish rolling on the bottom of a deep hole. And with how hard it fought I thought it was over 20 for sure.

I eventually nymphed just to hopefully get at least 1 fish and finally got a nice brown, so at least I got something. And the fallfish was cool too.

(My friend was with me to help land the brown so that’s why the nets don’t match in the photos)

tfo makes some great rods, I use the Blue Ribbon 5 wt for creek smallies and trout.

yes, but not a specific streamer line. I just got the best looking 6wt line I could find on sale on sierra, Airflo Superflo Ridge 2.0. I didn’t know what type of line I should’ve gotten when I got it and I still don’t know if it was a stupid choice, but it worked great. I’ve heard complaints about Airflo but so far none of them have turned out to be true at least in my case

Nice fallfish!! That disappointment will go away with time. I've caught many trout but few fallfish of that size.
 
Once or twice a year I will do a night float and mouse the Upper Delaware. We always catch a few big fall fish on mice. Was shocking the first time or two. Now it’s a game of what will be on the end our line. I had a beaver take a mouse once too. Wasn’t too fun.

I hooked a muskrat on the white on a mouse once. I think it was more surprised than I was.

They do fight harder than trout, from what I’ve noticed. I’ve always liked them but they do cause a lot of disappointment when you realize what you actually have hooked.

I have memories from when I was a little kid of watching huge fallfish get thrown on the bank and left to suffocate by the stocked trout chasers. When I tried to throw one back, I was stopped and told “always throw the suckers on the bank, they hurt the trout.” A little ironic that it’s the stocked fish hurting the native fallfish, never sat right with me.

I will never forget the one time in the gorge on LJR, early winter fishing the deep hole next to one of the bridge piers. Streamer knocked hard, instant pulling and head shakes. Thought I found the one. Was a big beautiful fall fish.
