Suggestions for blanks and components

fishidiot, I built up a 5 piece cabelas stowaway a couple years ago. 7'6" 4 wt. makes a nice small stream rod, I carry it on the bike. nice blank for the price, think it was around 30 bucks!! might have been on sale, can't remember

All,

I appreciate all the input.

I've taken a walk and thought about it. I'm going to go with a fast 6wt.

The gl3 is moderately fast, but I don't have any true fast action rods. I figure the 6wt is perfect for my streamer fishing addiction (I fish them almost exclusively for some spring trips). The fast 6wt could also sub in for the 5wt on windier days or bigger water. Yes, it's also a perfect Montana rod, which is a consideration.

The brookie rod is next, and I am thinking glass to change it up, but the stowaway would definitely fill a great need.

So I'm up for suggestions on a 'the faster the better' 6wt blank for under $150.

I'm looking at the one boyer mentioned, the TFO TiCr and Dan Craft FT.

Any thoughts or alternatives?

could try the caniac thing:

I dunno Jay - sounds like you and trowpa are looking for the same rod. I let Steve cast a couple of my rods this weekend, and when he got to the Sage XP, his face lit up. A really fast 5wt is pretty much a 6wt......

Dan Craft makes a blank even faster than the FT - the FTXL. I imagine the 6wt FTXL would be a cannon and a half. For the money, Dan Craft blanks are untouchable.

Ed,

I saw the FTXL, but wanted to keep costs down. I think the FT should do the job, and yeah this is turning into trowpa's thread X2.

Thanks for the tip.

gonna take more than a weekend to build for sure. get the forcast 6' blank for a 2wt..

Get a faster 9 1/2 ft 7wt for bass or steelhead.

Killer deal here and I have built two of these for myself and am VERY happy.

How about that float rod you've been talking about. You can pick up the Rainshadow RX7 blank for less than $90.

cute - i think that is dan craft's new CATXPLR blank. Its a real cannon...doesn't do much to protect 7x tippet though.

6'6" 4 wt or 7' batson ,

Just to clarify - according to Dan, the FTXL is not as fast as the FT.

From what I gather the FTXL is in between the SIG V and the FT.

I'm leaning towards the FTXL, but i'm trying to get my hands on one to cast....just emailed Big Dady as his phone just gave me a busy signal all day.

And yes - sounds like Jay and I are looking for something similar - maybe I'll wait till Jay builds his so I can try it :) Hurry up Jay!!!!

Oh - and JayL - i should mention that you should ignore the prices for the FTXL - they aren't that expensive. Dan can't list the real prices on the site due to some MSRP agreement. Contact him directly for the price if you are interested - the discounted price is about 20% less for the FTXL which brings them within $20 or so of the FT.

Dancraft is in your price range and is a very good blank. Here is the page for a 9’ 6wt FT with reviews:

Good luck Jay.

I have a TFO TICR rod in an 8wt and I LOVE it Jay. I use it for steel, but also for throwing streamers in lakes in the summers. I got it within a year of learning to fly fish and I really couldn't believe how far I could toss a fly. That was before my casting was any good. It's very stiff and very smooth. I may be biased because I haven't cast too many rods in my fly fishing career, but I wouldn't sell the rod to you for what I bought it for!

Keep us updated on the project. Maybe when my father in law retires (he's a woodworker) I'll convince him to learn to build rods ;-)
