Had a good trip yesterday, even though it turned VERY windy for the afternoon. Had success on the fly and light spin tackle. Three of us fishing, landed about 10 each, maybe more, with the largest around 30". We didn't get into any really big ones, and caught our fair share of shorts, but it was good fishing.

Some fish porn for your viewing pleasure:

Good job, nice fish. 10 of those a day will keep you coming back. Didn't catch 10 total for a couple seasons and haven't been down for at least 3 years. Glad to see it may have turned the corner ...again.

Purple,

When you come down, do you use a guide or do you go it in your own? The only reason I ask is if we didn't have a guide, we would have been SOL when it got windy. He knew where to go and what to do. It was a south wind, so there was nowhere to hide. We bounced jigs while drifting, and caught almost as many fish as we did when conditions were perfect. Between the wind and the incoming tide, we were drifting at 2.3 knots. After about 45 minutes of that, the only other boat on the entire flats was another guide.

As to turning the corner, we have been fishing with this guide over 10 years, and we have had two bad seasons due to weather and water conditions. One year we caught one schoolie and a largemouth bass and he only charged us half of the charter price. We fished hard for 7 hours. Point is, I don't think there is any corner to turn with repect to the fishery, it's just that the conditions have to be ideal. We got lucky most years I guess.

If anyone is interested, shoot me a pm and I will give you the contact info for the guide.

We used a guide (Tom Hughes) 3 times . He was great, always put us on fish. We learned techniques and general areas. My buddy bought a small boat (not a south wind boat) and we did well for several years, getting out 3-4 times a year. There of course were some bad days, but like you said conditions are a huge factor. Then we had a couple years of next to nothing. That combined with "life happening" and it's been a few years since I've been out. Glad you have had success. What flies did you use? I always had best success with a blue over white clouser.
