I have decided to try my hand at tying streamers. I have not attempted this before, and was wondering if you guys could help me out. I don't want to spend a lot right off the bat. I would like to start with 3-4 different types of streamers particularly for southeastern and central PA streams. Can anybody give me insight on the basic materials I need to get started. I have been tying for about 2 years now, so I have all the tools neccessary. I just need info on hook sizes, colors, and generic materials. Thanks.

Here are my three favorite streamers with material lists and tutorials:

Good tyin’….

Mickey Finns are easy to tie and effective, especially in the fall. Red and yellow bucktail, oval and flat silver tinsel. I use anywhere from size 6 to 10 streamer hooks.

Thanks alot guys. That will be plenty of ammo to get me started!

One of the most effective streamers is a Shenk's White Minnow. White marabou tail and I use a white cross cut rabbit zonker strip twisted in a dubbing loop for the body. You can also use white rams wool for the body.

Black nose dace (black, brown and white bucktail with silver mylar body) and mickey finn (yellow and red bucktail or even yellow and orange bucktail with silver mylar body) also are great streamers.

Simply "Blond" series bucktails are also effective but generally these are larger streamers. Tail is tuft of bucktail, silver mylar body and then bucktail tied in on top of shank just behind eye.

Ooooooh, I like that one! I looks like it would undulate and be VERY lifelike in moving water. OK, now I'm in a predicament. Every time I try to tie different patterns, I find myself buying LOTS of materials and things to keep them in. Ahhh, fly fishing, the wonders never cease (but my wallet does)!

First off welcome to the boards Weesh. I think you've gotta alot of good advice above.

Personally clousers (crayfish, minnows) and wooley's is all you need in the line of streamers if your fishing small to medium waters.

Jay loves his articulated streamers which he's gone into great detail about in past threads check em out. He loves em BIG........ right Jay...

Black and olive wooly buggers are great to start out on. When your ready to expand and upgrade check out Kelly Galloups articulated streamers. I fished for 3 years before I tied some heifer groomers. No use for buggers now unless I'm going brookie fishing.

jay u have a streamer that is above all others ... i think !

I do. Gotta crank a few more out. :)

The clouser minnow is where I hang my hat.

buy different colors of bucktail marabou and rabbit strips... should be able to tie most streamers with those materials. Throw them all together on a 2/0 hook with a stinger about 10" in length and you have a JayL fly. :) (looking forward to tossing some of my monstrosities at the JAM!)
