I think your’s is a popular sentiment judging by the lack of hipper availability. I wet wade for smallmouth but feel naked without boots going through the high weeds along a lot of streams trout fishing. They’re the first line of defense against ticks. Easy to see and dispose of them against lighter color boots.I find hip waders a pain. If it's warm enough I wade bare. If not I use guide pants. Once a hip boot gets filled with water it's a nightmare.
I have thought about pants as another option but worry about them staying up.
