Spot finder fees. First I have heard of such a thing

Orvis has him dressed up like a NASCAR driver with the logos. Fulling Mill has him doing promos every other month. His public persona is so heavily tied to nymphing.

When you talk to him in person or see him at a show he seems to love dry fly fishing - his casting pond presentation at the Lancaster Fly Show was all about this and he blew away the actual CCI who went prior to him with his casting skills. He is very brand agnostic. And almost seems embarrassed he has to mention his sponsors.

Just seems like a good guy that loves fishing and teaching - but has to also deal with the other stuff to make a living.

Sponsorship can change a guy...

If you post a whole bunch, then it's not "spot' naming. If you're going to a piece of water in Idaho, I doubt you're going to PLOP right next to someone. There's plenty of room. For me , it's a toe-hold, a place or more likely, a REGION to start. I'm still and always looking for the next good spot or new waters to ply. Think, what does having a guide do? Much more than this. It's only one or two people a day,but still....
I just have the sense that I'm always trying to find a spot to fish, that I have to maneuver, as about all of us do, to find a space. That's without space-naming. Fly fishermen will not magically appear. Showing and telling numerous other good spots can spread pressure and actually, instead of crowding beside you on Spring or Penns or wherever, they're on the Clarion, the Allegheny tailwaters or other creeks. They'll take that excusion to White Deer or Honey Creek or whatever. My 2 cents.

I fixed your post for you, Syl.

There are no fish in White Deer. Trust me.

I enjoy his videos but I've not watched any recently. On the topis of YT fly people charging for their content I was surprised to recently receive an email from the web owner of Troutnut.com. I was a major contributor to that site for many years. About two years ago I stopped posting because there were never any new members and I got tired of seeing myself and a few other regulars posting the same stuff over and over. His email was to inform me he is now monetizing his site. There is still going to be a free portion but to receive enhanced photographs and more details to some of his trips will now cost a few dollars a month.

I also recently started watching Jensen fly fishing videos. It's a husband & wife team who have outstanding videos of them hunting really big browns, and some rainbows, in exotic locations and/or private waters. At the beginning of every video they have a little spiel about joining there monthly subscription format to get more information. They do catch big trout but it appears they only fish New Zealand, Chile, private property in Alberta, or very remote waters full of gullible cutties. Virtually anybody with a years worth of fly fishing experience would do quite well in those venues.

Dear Board,

All these comments remind me of the old joke about teachers. I'll paraphrase it for the vidiots so that it can be understood.

"Those who can, do. Those who can't video."

Ralphie Ciffaretto said it best on the Sopranos, "She's a who-er!" when he beat the girl to death outside Da Bing.

Regards,

Tim Murphy 🙂

Wonder why there is such a teacher shortage then. 🤷‍♂️🫥

You guys haven’t figured out this was an April Fools joke by Drew yet?
Yeah. If you read earlier pages in this discussion, that has already been commented on and we came to the consensus that those words were butt-covering BS.

We could be wrong, though, but that doesn't seem sincere to me, either. It seems like backpedaling.

Dear SBecker,

I just said it was an old joke, I didn't say I liked it or that it was funny. I used it because it fit the video craze.

My father is a retired schoolteacher, so I know a little about the gig and truly appreciate those who teach. As a kid, I had many teachers who helped me and who I still remember almost 50 years later.

Regards,

Tim Murphy 🙂

My point wasn’t trying to portray you as someone making fun of teachers. It was more of a, “people wonder why” type comment. My wife teaches in one of the best elementary schools in the state, and top school districts. They can’t even get subs. Education is in big trouble.

Sincerely,

Me 😊

Drew pinned a comment to the top of his most recent video. Read it and make up your own mind. Short version, I’m not buying the intent was an April Fool’s gag. The whole post has undertones of financial motivations.

He rides a guy who gave him pushback, in a well crafted and thought out response I might add, and claims he doesn’t want guys like that viewing and commenting on his channel. He’s gonna get his wish.

He also got a comment from HugeFlyFisherman, an often controversial and fairly large YT FFing channel, that was pretty funny.
