southern South Carolina, late sept/early oct?

might do a little bike ride throught the south this fall, hitting the smokies and the blue ridge for brookies, might also head over to the edisto beach/hunting island area of SC for a couple nights and was wondering if anyone has any experience in that area? probably not gonna be able to do a guided trip or anything like that(I'm too cheap!) but I'd like to hit some of the backwaters or coastal areas. Species? Flies? rod wt? maybe rent a kayak?
any info very appreciated.
