Now that Trails.com has ruined Topozone for us, are there any similar web sites out there?

I used Topozone a ton when it was free. It was great for finding any stream in PA, and helped me catch a lot of native brookies and wild browns.

Darn good question. I was thinking the same thing the other day.

Google maps isn't too bad.

Google let's you toggle to "Terrain," which is a topographical map view.

Try is link, http://mapper.acme.com/ there are several views to choose from, you can mark your streams with GPS coord. By the way this is my first post after view this site on and off for several years.

Jack, I'm a devout follower of google maps/terrain view. Great tool, easier to navigate for me than Topzone was.

Oh, there's also the USGS maps. They're website has it set up into a google type system, just that there's a "topo" button at the top, which then gives you the quad maps.

You can also download each quad in pdf format for free, and print them out.

Not real user friendly system, but once you get em downloaded you have the pdf's and can name them as you choose.

To get there:

http://store.usgs.gov/b2c_usgs/b2c/start/(xcm=r3standardpitrex_prd)/.do

Top left corner just under the search bar, click "map locator".
Make sure the button on the right is chosen "navigate".
Zoom in on area of interest google maps style.
Click the topo tab to view it right away.

If you want to download the maps, on the right side, click the "mark points" button. If you're zoomed enough you see the quadrangle squares.

Click in the square of interest, it puts a marker on it. Now click your marker and download. They're big, probably not work safe, and dial up users (if there's any left) beware.....

P.S. The previous application is also available as an add on to google earth, if you have downloaded that.

Here are a couple of suggestions
PASDA
http://www.pasda.psu.edu/
Delorme Topo USA (49 bucks for eastern us)
http://www.delorme.com/
Expert Gps
http://www.expertgps.com/purchase.asp?app=expertgps4

The delorme package is good for interfacing with hand held gps units. Expert GPS allows import of shape files which can be downloaded from PASDA. While pricey, expert gps allows the conversion of many formats and has some gis capabilities.

PM me I have developed overlays using the PASDA data.

For fast info I too use AcmeMapper. It is fairly fast, google based and does a great job for GPS conversion. I also use Microsoft live, which has probably some of the coolest aerial with the "bird's eye" view (not available in all areas) and it also has a "trek" maker that you can make directions with photos and email to someone, howver it has no topo, just great aerial if your looking for parking.
