Smallie fishing

A look back on warmer days, prespawn smallmouth fishing last April.
Those are some nice bass! I like that streamer, his eyes scream eat me. Seemed like a good fight on some of them. Won’t be too much longer and the warm water species should be biting again 🙂

Streamer was D&D, if you dont already know give it a shot, can't beat it when fish are aggressive. Can't wait till spring, my memories of warm weather can only sustain me for so long

They are right now…through the ice. Fishing for panfish has been good after a few yrs of little to no ice in SE Pa. Additionally, with the right location and bait, one can catch some very nice SMB through the ice in SE Pa.

I can't get into ice fishing. Freezing temps, sitting stationary, and no cast and retrieve take the fun out for me. I respect ice fishing, cool to see people jigging a big square they cut out in a ice shack

You could make a hole and stand back 20 feet and cast a dry fly into it. Might work.

Im with you though. I will fish in the winter. But not while supported by ice

Where are they having success? When we were kids, we used to spend a decent amount of time fishing Middle Creek lake. We did ok but I never got the idea the lake was all that great. The spring crappie run was fun and we caught a few bass. Winters were spent doing a lot of ice skating and the ice fisherman were on the lake as well. Never saw them catch much but I remember the Lancaster paper doing a feature on ice fishing the lake. maybe the paper picked a good day but the fish were stacked on the ice including some nice bass. We tried hacking through a couple iced over holes a couple times. I think we caught a sunny or 2 but we didn't really know what we were doing. It's always had some appeal to me for some reason.

They're biting now if you can find some warm-water-influenced stream/river sections. A friend of mine had a banner day a few days ago.

Well, you don’t have to worry about drag, somebody high holing you, what brand of waders you’re wearing, or somebody condemning you for fishing in water that’s too warm.

I've said this many times and I'm not kidding, MY bucket list fishing trip of all time is a Grumpy Old Man style week long ice fishing excursion with a buddy in a heated ice shanty and a TV & DVD player and plenty of beer.

I don't know why, but the thought of being able to open a little trap door in the floor and fishing for 10 - 20 minutes after getting up in the middle of the night to get rid of some of that beer sounds immensely appealing to me.

Not to mention perch or walleye for breakfast. 😉
