August is generally a time in which I look forward to wading the big river for smallies and other warm water species. It’s been a disaster for many of us so far this year with the water conditions really only being fishable a handful of times since the opener in June.

Today I had a scheduled day off and eager to do some fishing, I reluctantly headed to local wild trout stream. Conditions were about as good as I have ever seen them in the summertime and I found many wild trout that readily took a dry fly.

Not as exciting as catching an 18 inch smallie on the river but the scenery and beauty of these wild trout is something that I will never tire of.

Here’s a few photos for everyone to enjoy on this rainy day.

That stream is flowing nicely for August!

Good to hear of a good day on that stream. It's fished like garbage for me the last 2 or 3 outings. Its holes tend to fill in with that red sandstone over time and a flood is a good thing there as it can scour some of the deposited sand out and recreate some habitat.

After the floods in 2011, it fished great for a couple of years.

Swattie I would give it a go. I’ve experienced the same thing as you. The stream really hasn’t fished for me well in recent years but now it looks very good in many spots. Even the upper end looks good. I only fished a small section before the rain and it was certainly worth it.

I might be wrong, but that sure looks like Segloch. If it is, good on you for the day you had. I haven't fished there in 10 years. Glad to see it is still hanging tough.

Very nice report.

With the bass rivers junked up, this summer should be a tremendous small stream fishing opportunity, especially for freestone mountain trout streams.

At least here in my neck of the woods in SCPA, even the small mountian trout streams are blown out. When this stormy weather pattern finally clears, there should be some great small stream fishing later this summer and into early autumn... hopefully with many reports like this one.

Great to hear of your successful outing. It's good motivation.

Got out and about this afternoon and, in fact, local streams are not in bad shape. Upper Breeches and lower Mountain Creek are high but fishable.

We're still getting scattered storms across the region, however the mountain small stream game should be pretty good this weekend.

Nice! Looks like a great outing. Yep, you can’t get into any fish sitting on the couch at home feeling sorry for yourself about the tough conditions.
