I am curious if anyone has experience with both the Simms Pro and the Folstaff wading staff as to what their thoughts are about each and which one they prefer.

Any input would be appreciated.

Nothing but problems with folstaff (3 times returned), broke the simms one, have had the orvis one for 3 years, by far the best imho

A lot of pros & cons for both but a couple of points:

The Simms Staff

Cons:

Isn’t as sturdy (but should hold most folks) and requires two hands to open.

Is MUCH longer folded up than a Folstaf.

Has been redesigned thrice in the last 6 years so if yours fails in a few years, you may get something completely different.

IMHO opinion the one size fits all sliding sleeve idea sucks.

The graphite option has warnings on it not to get it scratched. How do you do that?

Pros:

The steel cable inside should never wear out for a LONG time.

You can keep it folded up with no potential damage to the cable including leaving it in your trunk.

It doesn’t pull apart when it gets stuck in the mud.

If it fails, Simms will most likely send you a new one.

Has a retractor option.

The Folstaff

Cons:

The shock cord DOES wear out over time. Getting the staff serviced costs about $35 plus freight.

Folstaf does NOT recommend keeping it folded for long periods of time to get maximum life from the shock cord.

Leaving it in a hot trunk for long periods of time is bad for the rubber in the shock cords.

It can pull apart when stuck in the mud.

Is only warrantied against defects to the original owner. When it needs refurbishment, you WILL have to pay.

Pros:

Is VERY study.

Deploys INSTANTLY when pulled from the scabbard.

Design hasn’t changed (except the addition of heavier and more shock cords) in more than 30 years.

Comes in multiple sizes.

BTW – I own the Orvis too. It is OK with replaceable tips but they can fall out when you least expect it. It also requires two hands to deploy and is longer than the Folstaf folded up but can stay folded up with no problems.

Sorry about that, just check out the wading staff thread below in the gear talk list.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts
