shooting heads

i started picking up orvis shooting heads on ebay for my steelhead rig (8wt), as far as the running line, is there a big difference between the 20#(.029) and 30#(.034) for castability, or distance?

Yes there can be. I like cortland braided mono for shooting lines, you get alot more distance with it. The .029 will cast further than the .034..Generally the .034 is used for 10-12 wts. and the .029 is more for the lighter lines..
