seperating a fly rod?

I don't use anything, paraffin wax can attrack dirt and make things worse. Nose wax does the same.

I clean it with rubbing alcohol occasionally, a q-tip for the female end.

I always carry two small patches of bicycle inner tube in my fishing bag for just such an occasion, they give you that extra little grip to get the sucker apart. BTW, what type of rod/ferrules are we talking about here?
if nothing works, you will have a nice 9" one piece!
 
I found how well tubes work by accident. I used to cut strips to attach things to my backpack. Then the rod got stuck fishing in the rain and there they were. Worked great though I will say that if I can't get it apart after a pew pulls I use the waiting method more so to avoid damaging the rod than because its any better.
