School Me On This Line

It's either silk or nylon. Unfortunately, the only way to tell the difference is to burn one end. If silk, it will turn to ash; if nylon, it will melt into a ball.

Silk lines are pricey, and old ones can be refurbished. Vintage nylon probably isn't worth the bother.

It can also be lead core trolling line (again silk or nylon.)

I'm seeing little sticky black balls of napalm that keep burning, so I'm thinking nylon. What years would this have been popular? I've got a spool of it, so I'm still thinking of fishing it just for shits and giggles on my phillipson/pfluegler rig.

Nylon fiber wasn't around until WWII. Nylon lines must have still been produced until at least 1963, since that's when I got my first fly outfit, which included a braided nylon line. (Of course all modern lines are braided nylon at the core, but coated with PVC.)

Short answer to your question, the 1950's, give or take 5 years.

You'll probably have to dress the line with Mucilin or Otter Butter or such.
