Looking to expand my fly tying abilities by learning new flies. And by doing expanding my fly selection. So where do you guys buy your stuff from online?

feathercraft has a decent selection for synthetics i advise you if your buying a neck or saddle to examine it in person also try to patronize some smaller flyshops too

Performanceflies.com Kevin will hook you up.

fly tyers dungeon and flyshack

I buy a lot from J Stiockard. They have good customer service and don't seem to mind special requests. I also order from Flyfishers Paradise. Great customer service, really fast shipping, and good quality stuff. If you are into synthetics, Flytyers Dungeon is having his annual Christmas box sale. For about $25 you can get a ridiculously large assortment of just about everything he sells. His shipping can be a bit slow, but it is a really good value.

You really want to buy materials at a shop so you can see what you're buying.

I don't buy any fly tying materials online. I'm fortunate and have several good fly shops nearby. I agree with Chaz I want to see what I'm buying.

You can't go wrong getting your materials at "The Classic FlyFisherman" in Lansdale. A great selection and the best prices around. Plus all the help you need. Check him out.

If you don't want to get killed on shipping I would buy from
http://www.bearsden.com/ they charge actual shipping costs.

When buying natural materials I always buy in person so I can see what I'm getting. The one place I buy from in Nj the guy offered me a stool when I was looking for the perfect BT for a SW pattern I wanted I spent 30 mins looking through about 25 different tails till I found one that would work. If your planning on hitting any of the shows like Somerset you can buy material than and some booths offer some good deals.

Yup, I also like to see natural materials in person before buying. Sometimes this just isn't possible, but there's two people I trust to pick out materials over the phone.

Steve from Flyfisher's Paradise is one person I trust completely to do this. I can describe what I'm tying, and Steve will search through his inventory to find what I'm looking for. He's always 100% honest with me, and he'll tell me if he has something that will do what I want. He NEVER tries to sell me something that isn't exactly what I need.

When I mentioned our upcoming PAFF Tying Jam, and that I was looking for donations for our raffle, I only got out like 30 seconds of an explanation before he wrote out a very generous gift certificate for us. No questions asked. Very cool!

Another person I trust to pick exactly what I need is Chris Helm.

While he has an online store, when you call you speak to Chris. When it comes to deer hair, he's the best there is. I called looking for a particular type of hair in an unusual color, and he rooted through his personal stash, found some patches of deer hair, and actually sat at his tying bench to see if it would work for my purposes. Now that's service!

I'd be remiss if I didn't mention our very own sandfly - owner of Big Meadows Fly Shop.

http://www.bigmeadowsflyshop.com/

You can call him, tell him what you're looking for, and he'll go to great lengths to get you what you need. If he doesn't have what you need, he'll get it, or make it. Sometimes his material source is still walking when you call. :-o

2nd for Performance Flies. Stuff you can't get anywhere else. I love Jan Siman dubbing.

do you one better.

12 cents a bead! By far, the cheapest price I have seen anywhere. Gotta do packs of 100 I think. Plus, shipping is $2.49

At ripslips.com enter code "flytier" for free shipping

ahhhh, wish you would have posted this last night! I ordered a couple hundred to replensih my stock. Owell, only $2.95.

Prior to making an on-line purchase, you should consider the explicit price + implicit economic costs. Although harder to quantify, implicit economic costs are real.

For example, to you, what is the economic value of a viable, locally owned shop. If there isn't a local shop, will you have to drive a distance to purchase leaders, split shot ........ or other goods/staples?

On another thread, a fisherman was decrying the abscence of a local shop in his area. For him, explicit costs of aquiring basic were up, probably dramatically.

riplips beads are good quality. I got a nice care package from them last year with a bunch of tungsten beads in exchange for blog advertising and they have quality stuff.
