I'm in need of restocking my box for the Central PA limestoners and am very deficient in scud/sowbug patterns. I've tied some scuds before, but am intrigued by the Ray Charles and its simplicity. Anyone tie/fish these and if so, what are your thoughts? In doing some research, I see they are a popular fly "out west".

I actually thought this was going to be a thread about Ray. Damn, fly tying in the fly tying forum.

I like that. I bought some Ostrich Herl for the purpose of tying up some cress bugs, but I have yet to use it. This is a good pattern to try.

It works fine, but I use a pattern that is even simpler. Seriously...Jacks tackle rainbow sowbug dubbing on a hook and brushed out and trimmed.

Nice and productive fly, but VERY FRAGILE!! I recommend a fine mono/wire counter rib. I also think a simple pattern like SBecker says will work as long as the thread head is red or fire orange. Just my two cents.

I find red thread works amazing, ive had success on many rivers when nothing else was working on these. I tie them from 16-20 personally

With the dubbing on a hook pattern, I always use red thread, just because the Ray Charles pattern. You can crank out those things fast.

I tied some of these up last night, but I added a silver wire ribbing. I followed another YouTube video I found.

HA! That made me LOL.

Supposed to be killer on the big horn. "Carry an assortment in sizes 12 -20. In soft hackle, standard and firebead versions. They produce in colors grey, pink and tan."

Another good use for ostrich herl. This stuff looks to be killer!

Try the other ones bro....

Lol I am a firm believer in that dubbing. Plan to stock up at the fly show.

Yep. Pretty much standard on the horn.

Impressionistic patterns do best there due to the staggering number of naturals in the drift. You need to make your fly stand out. I do not use nearly as many ray Charles or hot bead flies elsewhere.
