Sage Pulse, Orvis Recon, Winston Nexus 5 wts. Compare and contrast.

I cast the 9 ft. 5 wt Nexxus and Recon side by side. The winston bends a little deeper. The Recon is tippier. The Recon was a bit fast for it's line weight. I wish the nexxus was a bit softer on the tip. The Recon might be sweet if you up-line it. The Recon is a bit much for anything closer than 25 ft or so, unless you cast really hard and fast. I judged the nexxus to be the better rod for 90% of trout fishing. If you constantlly laid-out 60 ft of line, the Recon might be better. It was a bit lighter. Don't overlook the Scott A4. The numbers show it being heavier but it's not clubby or heavy in the hand. the nexxus is no different. I have been really disappointed by Sage's down-market offerings. some (like the Fli) have been really crap. Based on what I do, spending a day on the water with the 3 rods I mentioned, I'd say the Recon would be 3rd only because it's made to cast far well (parking lot rod) more than put a sz. 16 spinner 25 feet from you exactly, time and again.
