The Potomac River had a good SMB spawn this year described as "fair to excellent" across the areas surveyed. This is in marked contrast to the 2013-14 Young of the Year (YOY) numbers, which were poor.

In particular, the section from Dam 5 down to Dam 3 had good numbers. This is the section that many of us fish and YOY production in this stretch has been below average since 2008. This year the numbers were back up and above average. Also of note was good YOY numbers for largemouth bass below Harper's Ferry.

Among the major tribs, the Monocacy had below average YOY, but Conococheague had above average.

The surmise was that low, stable water levels in May and early June of this year may have contributed to the good YOY this summer. I'd imagine that the similar positive YOY results on the Susquehanna this summer are likely also a result of this weather trend.

Good news if you're a Potomac bass fan.
