Humphrey?

This fish breaks Fazle Buljubasic's record (a wall caught Walnut Creek brown, I believe) from 20 years ago. Before that, it was a Raystown spillway brown, and before that, I don't recall, , maybe Joe? But if the reference is to Joe Humphrey's hatchery escapee, that was a number of record holders ago. In other word's it's been Not Joe for many years.

I care less than 1/8 of a rooty toot about fish records, but within the 1/8 that I do care, I sort of think that there should be separate categories for browns from the big lake and browns from other Commonwealth waters.

1. That is a heckuva brown, no matter where it was landed.

2. As for joe: Remember, joe has/had a section of upper Spring Creek flowing through the basement of his home when he "caught" his big trout. However, there is a guy who says he was with joe when he landed the fish, supposedly on Fishing Creek. Who knows?

3. Anyhow, the big brown from Erie is a monster, a lot bigger than anything I've ever caught. Some trout!

I do not like that Joe Humphrey! Stuff! Put a man down for putting up with you. Jealous. Jealous and with the whisk of a slight with wind, i will see you later.

Never ever, in your dream's you will come close! The man, bold and true, I never could be "HE".

Seems you ain't been fishing. Polecat!

And you don't respect Pa. That's right, Everyone in it for me, Well, ball shank, how about "US".

I know it's been a while since Joe held the record PA brown trout.
But that's the first thing that popped in my head with the OP's last sentence. And just a guess on my part.
Maybe CRB will clarify.

Anyway, at least Joe caught it FF'ing.
Don't believe that to be the case with the subsequent records.

And I agree with RLeeP.
Lake Erie should be a separate category

dryfly, don't wayfair on a daydream, dazzle, your in! In big! Could you imagine the big! Stand for true or fall for all!

I fall to the loud!

Joe still holds the record for a fly caught BT in PA (as has been mentioned), not that this is anything official.... But it matters to us FFers, more or less

It's certainly possible that his record could fall to another FFer but my guess is that an FFer today would probably release the fish. Some good photos and length/girth measurements could perhaps allow the angler to claim something of an unofficial biggest fly caught BT in PA. Sort of fun to ponder.

Anyway...
Thanks for the link to this story. It's neat to see something like this, even from Erie.

If not caught on a fly rod then it doesn't count.

For Maxima,

The susurration of the leaves on a late summer evening, and the murmuring of the fishermen streamside, while the raccoons splash for crayfish in the shallows.

All are on the breeze in the end.

Uh, oh. Brian, don't answer that!

Brian, it took only one word and a question mark for me to make my point. No need to answer because I already know the answer.

Why?

It really doesn't matter to most anglers, but in general it's easier to catch or land fish with spin gear vs fly gear.

It's sorta like killing a deer with a bow vs a rifle.

Plus, this is a fly-fishing site.

I go out with guys spin fishing and I fly fish. I almost always catch more. Flyrod for me has caught way more and bigger fish than spinning. It is better for presentation and even fighting and landing in my view. I am sure there are bait and lure specialists for trout that do well though.
I don't care about Joe Humphries or his fish. Famous, celebrity fishermen are just like famous Hollywood types. I know guys who no one know or cares about who catch plenty of big wild fish every year. they do it for the right reasons.

I both spin fish and fly fish. Spin fishing is clearly better for numbers of trout caught. But, without a doubt, fly fishing is better for targeting specific large fish. Often, when I locate a large trout when spinner fishing and am unable to catch it for one reason or another, I come back a day or two later with a fly rod. Many times, already knowing the location of the fish, I am able to present a fly successfully and catch that fish. If I am unsuccessful with the fly rod, I come back the next day with a big fat Canadian Crawler and its basically fail-proof haha

I fish at a lot at a local quarry. I’m the only one who consistently catches fish with a fly rod and catch just as many fish as the spin guys. They use jigs with gulp and worms which usually produce fish but there are just as many day when smaller midge patterns out produce bait. I’m targeting fish in the 10 to 20 foot deep range.

Streams Fly fishing is definitely a better tactic for trout. Once stocked trout get on a natural diet they definitely shy away from inline spinners and bait. Fly fishing is also better for fishing shallow fast riffle water where the trout like to hang. Spin guys tend to stay away from.

The only place I can say spin angles have the advantage is chasing large fish with a jerk bait. We have flies like a drunk and disorderly. It’s literally a jerk bait made this feathers. It’s apples and apples in my opinion. We can just throw the small stuff.

I dont spin fish often (hardly at all) but for sure I'd do a lot better with bait then flies. There's always exceptions but on the whole fly fishing is less productive. Cast a streamer or mouse at night vs a jointed Rapala, let me know which one works better.
