I never kill a good hackle supply, not till they hit age 3 anyhoo. plucking and picking up molted hackle last a lot longer, learned this from Harry Darby. besides they free roam and the meat sucks, to tough from chasin the hens. make ok soup though.

my hens: they come right inside for a plucking, just like a hair dressers only trim the feathers. LOL

Beautiful birds. Do you have any information available on how to breed/keep/harvest/etc these guys? I have some land and have been thinking about getting some birds.

raising birds for dry fly hackle takes years of culling, keeping records, dividing for mating, keeping all roosters in separate cages. Ugh! did it darby duns in the early 70's. Now I am just crossing for a partridge sub. with hens. I sell the eggs also. going to cross grizzly with my big rooster reddish brown see if I can get some wet cree hackle. If you just want to have fun then decide what breeds you want, build a pen and roost you are good to go. I free range mine and lose about 10 a year to predators.

I wondered where Lou got all that hackle. Looks like about ten birds worth.

Got some of Sandfly's partridge sub feathers - nice stuff!

Big Meadows Fly Shop is a must see for anyone in the area. I was amazed to see tying materials that I haven't seen in decades anywhere else. Bob's got connections.

One thing I learned - NEVER mess with sandfly's hackle supply. :lol:

Looks like the "short rod" there might be more useful to harvest fish in these low, clear conditions than the long one.
