Orvis boots and original studs (similar to self tapping screws) lasted a good while, but replacements don't last more than an outing or two. I went to this:

Expensive option but I've also used them on icy winter hikes so I get more usage than just fishing. And I completely disagree about the utility of metal studs while wading. Rubber soles with no studs is like ice skating.
