In case you missed it buried in another thread, the Mentored Youth fishing day is this Saturday. It was initiated in 2012 and quickly the annual tally of kids participating was 35K-45K. The temp on Sat is supposed to be in the mid to high 70’s across the state and maybe hit 80 in part of the SE.

I have been walking in a park over the past couple of weeks covering about 1mi of stream since the stream there was stocked. After or during the last rain the trout that were concentrated in stocked holes moved out in great quantity. I assume they spread themselves out, which is a good thing in my view, as only a few fish were still visible in the honey holes. With low flows that have been developing, they may be holed up again by Saturday, but spread out to holes and runs that were not directly stocked. Also, indicative of movement is where some of the golden RT are now located.

72 with a 40% chance of rain forcasted in yinzer country.

Rain or shine my son will be drifting a kernel of corn through a hole somewhere.
Enjoy that time. Hope he has a great day. After 15 years of baseball we finally have an open spring. Only made it out once on youth mentor day and it was cold. We plan on heading out Saturday to a region of the state we’ll be spending 4 days at in May to scout and maybe hit some special reg water if it’s void of kids. Hope to see a lot of kids out along the way.

I might try to take my 3.5 year old son out somewhere close by to show him what "opening day" is all about. I only have a couple hours in the morning, so we might be at turtle creek.

I re-read the regs, and it says this:
  • "Youth should be capable of fishing on their own, with limited assistance from mentor."
That will be pretty much impossible for a kid my sons age. 🤷‍♂️

Classic bait option right there. I will try to take a kid out, too.
12 years old. He will only use corn or spinners. That's it. Cant convince him otherwise. Not interested in a fly rod, which is fine. If those don't work it's off to get chicken wings for lunch somewhere, although his patience is growing.

Hey if he will let you help him hold the rod its probably worth a shot, even if it lasts 3 minutes. Go somewhere with a playground nearby, Linn Run was always my go to when my kids were younger. Fish as long as he can take it then let him play.

That was one of the hardest things I had to learn - how I fished and how long I fished were not desires innate to my children. They needed breaks, to wander around, splash in the water (if it was a warmer day), and they liked to eat food and drink hot beverages. And they got cold easily. Fishing from 8AM until shortly after dusk, without stopping for sustenance, didn't work out too well.

Funny I took my daughter out a few years back and she was 3.5… it was sunny and 75 or so. Had her in the bike trailer and biked up to an area (not far from lot) and stopped to fish, was trying to make a ‘thing’ of it cause we traveled by bike and had snacks and stuff. Handed her a fly rod and let her flail. Fish cop stopped and gave me hell about it. Despite the fact we were sharing a rod, most of it was us just playing (wet wading ankle deep, flipping rocks). Had he watched for more than 2 seconds he would’ve seen what we were doing. Then gave me a short lecture “this is about the kids”, to which I replied I know that’s why we are here, playing in the creek on a nice day. He was a jerk but we had a great time.edit: haven’t taken her out for youth opener since but that’s only because of the weather.

So while it’s a valid concern, I wouldn’t let it hold you back and recommend sharing one rod.

Since the regs say "limited assistance from mentor", I would have mentioned that's all you were doing, especially since you only had the one rod, and was within the bounds of the regs/law. He was being a jerk!

One of my neighbors has a 3 month old, maybe I can take them out and teach them how to fish. WINK, WINK!
Honest officer, that little tyke right there caught those 2 fish.

I read somewhere that casting the rod and immediately handing it off is permitted. I believe the only thing the mentor isn't allowed to do is set the hook, but I may be wrong.

Hey, I need a hook set mentor too!!

I have lost too many big fish in the past month, and I need a mentor for this. Applications open 🙂
