I skipped out on this trip and I’m trying to replan for May. In general, how crowded is the stream on weekends in May?

It will be pretty crowded in May, but it's a fairly big river by trout fishing standards so you should be able to find a good spot to fish without much trouble. Good luck.

Crowded: you can find space. A few tips. Get to the stream at or before daybreak. Sit next to a riffle, followed by a run and entering into a pool. If after observation, you see no rising fish, tie on a nymph rig and dredge the riffle. Then dredge through the run if there are still no risers. Finally, once you see risers in the run or pool below, tie on a dry fly and if necessary, a dropper.

The top spots fill up first. Look at it this way.... is the "lower 30%" of the fishing spots on the J better than where you usually fish?
The water is at a excellent level now and you can find spots all along the river. Unless we get an inch of rain
