Little Brown Stones are Out

Saw them on the Juniata River while chasing muskies earlier this week. These were the bigger "brown" stones that are over half an inch in length. To be sure they were sparse and I saw only a few compared to the heavy hatches of this species that occurs on our warm water rivers.

I think this is pretty early as I expect the smaller little blacks in Feb-March and the larger browns in Mar-April.

Anyway, it's a nice harbinger of a good start to a (hopefully much better) new year.
 
It definitely seems early. I wasn't expecting even little black stone for another couple of weeks.
 
I actually saw good numbers of little black stones hatching several weeks ago in the Laurel Highlands. None observed last weekend though.
 
Wouldn't yuh know...

While walking my dog this afternoon along a local WW creek they were out. The ones I saw today were of the little black wingless variety.
