Is it just me?

I should laugh, but that is my memory of the first day of trout in SW Pa when I was a kid in the 70’s….. put me off of fishing for trout (at least opening day) for two decades.

I have respect & understanding for anyone who is steeped in the tradition of Opening Day...

However, I have only done it a few times with probably only my first or second times as a spin fisherman conducted with great seriousness...

These days, I'll only consider it for an hour or less IF I have nothing else to do and someone who is equally indifferent comes with me and brings beer... 😉

Didn’t fly fishing really peak in the 90s after Brad Pitt starred in a feature length advertisement for it? How does the Covid spike compare to that? I admittedly am part of the Covid spike, but I’ve stuck with it. The amount of barely used entry level outfits available on Facebook marketplace tells me many others haven’t.

I have a lot of mixed emotions and thoughts about this, and most of them have been expressed already in this thread. I have lately been seeking out more social fly fishing opportunities, since for a long time most if not all of my fishing has been very solo. I have had some good experiences lately fishing with new friends.

I enjoy being the only person out there, having the best shots at all the biggest fish, and I am very competitive in that sense. I will also stop to chat, hand out a few flies, and be courteous when I encounter another like minded person who is equally obsessed with fishing as I am.

However, if you high hole me 40 ft up as I work upstream on a small blue line in a game land with your spinning rod, you are going to get an ear full...

If you want to get away from others, and you find others in the places you are, you might just need to switch your situation. Most people will fish when they have free time, hence the weekend warriors. (of which I am one)

They fish on easy to access, popular waters with lots of trout. Change up species, go after bass or walleye or carp. Fish at night. Go to places that are not a green line, or in a book. Risk getting skunked - and do not be disappointed when you do. Fish water that was written off as too warm or too polluted. You might not see anyone, and you might find what you are looking for - solitude.

What about getting high holed by someone with a fly rod...? 😉
Maybe my camo was working well and you did not see me crouching down and hiding behind that tree, so I will give you the benefit of doubt and assume your intent is positive 🙂

Tenka fisherman are so Zen you never noticed getting high holed

That is a great point for many reasons.

It sounds like I fished the same way you described for a long time, and I still like to have my serious days alone on the water. But social fishing on a crowded crick is somehow less triggering and changes the point of the day. Same with taking a kid fishing. The zoo doesn't matter as much.

You want a sure thing, then contend with the crowds and realize there is no sure thing. Or get skunked on new water and enjoy the fishing and the exploring and the expanded rolodex of spots when you need to avoid the crowds.

Also, some big old trouts in those marginal waters that even the dudes who contribute to and write the books keep for themselves 😉

I don’t notice more anglers anywhere that I fish for any species. I certainly don’t notice more fly anglers pre vs post-Covid. That may be because I don’t seek out the more famous waters and when I fish a famous water, two to be specific, it’s usually at night. I have only once fished a FFO water in the past 53 yrs and I have never seen angler on the wild trout stream that I frequent the most. Also, having fished during the peak of angling in Pa (1990 or 1991) when there were 1.1 million anglers and no trout stamp to keep the less serious off of trout waters, modern angling pressure seldom phases me. Finally, having done a large number of angler counts during opening days and the weeks that followed, it may be that I’m used to or habituated to seeing anglers in general, but I also know that I rarely saw fly anglers on regular stocked trout waters during the counts and still don’t see many today. It is so infrequent that it still surprises me a bit when I see a fly angler on a regular stocked trout water.

I always think about the Fabergé Organics shampoo commercial if I consider telling anyone about a place where I fish that I want to have for myself...

So basically I say nothing, especially with the Internet...

Neither do I, and I say that thankfully. I go out of my way to fish fairly remote, tough to access streams, to avoid the likelyhood of encountering other fishermen. IMO The solitude is a big part of the wild trout experience.

On three of my favorite streams, that I have collectively fished over 120+ times in 20+ years, I have seen 5 or 6 fishermen, total. I like that. I just pray the Lord continues to give me the good health and ability to get to them. 🙏

Same here...

I have fished some sections of some Class A creeks regularly since the 1980's and at one in particular that isn't remote or secluded, I haven't seen even 10 other fisherman IN TOTAL all of those years...

However as stupid and pathetic it sounds to those who believe the mantra "there are no secret places," I do have some "cloaking" behaviors I've adopted because I am an unapologetic, fervent, selfish, self-preservationist when it comes to fishing spots:

First, I never "fish & tell" or mention WHERE exactly I was, or are going fishing. I also no longer take anyone with me to a creek section I like a lot and want all to myself. I did in the past and later realized it was a huge mistake because later that person was looking for some local and Internet fame so he wasn't as closed mouthed as me. Today at a few of those places, I am no longer alone.

This is PARTICULARLY important if these places run through private property because crowds and/or bad behavior leads to posting...

Once I am at a location where I am trying to NOT draw attention, I try my best to hide that I am going fishing for as long as possible as I am getting ready by the car meaning the rod comes out last or I get ready as fast as possible and dash out of sight.

If there is a Class A or otherwise NON stocked trout stream where people driving/walking can see me fishing in a region where I typically never see anyone DURING the Regular Season, I will NEVER fish that stream or section during the Closed Period. I used to, but all I did was attract the attention of folks who want to tell me, "It isn't trout season yet" which leads to a discussion and attention to place I am fishing...

It sounds funny but once the season is open, I never see anyone at those same places so it must help a little to not attract attention to them when many folks think fishing ISN'T permitted.

If an under the radar Class A or natural reproduction stream runs by a roadway, under a bridge or along a place where people may be walking, if I hook a fish and a car or person approaches, I will let my line go slack to try and make it look like I haven’t hooked a fish...

I also admit to being a habitual liar when it comes to discussing results with anyone I encounter on stream or by the car. Typical response, "The fishing sucked, I saw no hatches and I got skunked..." If I am caught in the act of catching a fish, it is usually "This was the only fish of the day and BTW, some guy upstream was shooting at me." 😉

In regards to getting a little solitude at the few Stocked Trout Waters I'll fish, it is as easy as looking at the stocking schedule and NOT going for at least a week or two after the last fish dump. I also avoid stocked Fly Fishing Only Sections like the plague and most other Special Regulation sections most times of the year.

Don't get me wrong, I'll help if you ask about tackle, techniques and other stuff. I'll give you flies, teach you knots and share my beer, but other than telling someone where to take their kid fishing, when it comes to my favorite spots...

A proper gentleman never publicly discusses his fishing holes, grouse coveys, or woman. 🙂

The amount of anglers I see on the streams seems to be pretty similar to what I remember when I started serious into fly fishing in 1990. So I've seen the wave and "The Movie" and even rode it by coincidence to Montana the same year the movie came out .....and all over the frickin place LOL
I do definitely recognize that weekdays are no longer the secret they used to be. Fridays seem as bad or worse sometimes as a Saturday. Thursday is the old Friday, Monday is the old Sunday and if you're lucky you can have a bad weather Tues-Thursday with some peace and quiet.

What I do seem to see more often is a lack of manners on the stream......maybe because I'm solidly into my 50's now and more cognizant of bad behavior (and probably didn't realize I did some of the same dumb crap 30 years ago) but I see all sorts of crowding and rude type behavior.
Maybe ignorance....maybe intentional? Either way I sure seem to be a magnet for it LOL
Guys walking down and fishing the same run from the opposite bank is my all time favorite ,Just beyond the 20yd High hole. Had 4 guys do it to me last weekend (2 fly and 2 spin guys)

A couple weeks ago I was fishing a DHALO in the middle of a weekday afternoon and I literally couldn't see a person above me for at least 100yds to a bend and more than 200yds below me. I had the entire stretch to myself. It was glorious!
Knew it was too good to be true.....an "Older than me" fellow decked out fly fisherman pops out of the brush opposite of me ,and without even acknowledging my existence, literally wades 1/4 of the way out into the run I'm fishing almost directly across from me. 😕???
I said "Excuse me, are you seriously going to fish RIGHT HERE? There's a 1/4 mile of stream I can see without anyone fishing and you're gonna jump in right HERE (pointing at the water) ?"
(Somewhat politely I might add)
And immediately I get the all too familar PA canned response as if he was just waiting to use it....."I paid for my license the same as you , this isn't your stream......blah blah blah."

And I seriously don't look like the victim type.....there was a time in my life where I would have taken more serious exception to his reply but I let it slide, reeled up and let him have the run I just caught 10 trout from. LOL
😉

I bet behavior could be a spicy topic on it's own here. Probably already has been. Haven't searched!
