It's like an bad, enchanting EX that you date again every once in a while. It's Penns and it isn't nice to me. Oh, sure, it LOOKS good. I know it CAN be good. It has so much to offer. It just, so often...doesn't. The water is good, the bugs plentiful and the fish don't care. She just doesn't call back and it makes me think she doesn't care. I'm putting a lot more into this relationship than I'm getting out. It's fun. It's nice to be there but after the flash and splash... very little follow through. Dinner. Movie. No slaps. Cold dish. Or just the minimum. I hurt afterwards and I felt like she almost tried to kill me a few times. The good times are really good, but can I live on hope alone?
 
Penns is the 5’11 blonde bombshell. Super high maintenance. Gotta wine and dine her and being willing to play on her terms.

Spring is the girl with the cheese fries at bar at 1:55 AM wearing an outfit 3 sizes too small.

Little J is the one with a split personality. She can be awesome, easy to get along with, and fun to be around one day, and the next she’s telling you she needs space and it’s not you, it’s her.

BFC (and one other one that board members generally prefer doesn’t get mentioned), are the ones you take home to Mom IMO.

But yeah, sometimes we all just want the 5’11 blonde. Even if we know it’s probably a bad idea.

Finally. An analogy I can understand!
 
I feel like this is any highly pressured limestone influenced stream. You can never be sure when the trout are gonna eat, or what they want to eat. They aren't hurting for food because there is plenty to be had. You just have to catch them at the right time, or be willing to stoop to using squirmies and mop flies.

You speak as you have many, many experiences with such Ummm....cheese fries.
 
How bad is the bad? There are people much better at putting up numbers on Penns than I am but I rarely leave dissatisfied.

I fished Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday this week, two to five hours each of those days. I only fished dries. I don't count fish but have a general idea of what I've caught. I'd say I caught 25-ish fish. More than half of those fish came in less than two hours on Monday. As long as I'm not getting skunked, I don't feel like I'm being abused because Mondays can happen and it is all worth it.

I see that Monasticism isn't all bad. DSo long as they let me go fishing

That's kinda my experience. It's been do long since I had that Monday of yours.
 
If you want numbers on Penns, you have to nymph and just take advantage of dry fly options when they arise. I don't like to nymph. I mean, I still like it more than most things in life but I'll trade five nymphed fish for one on a dry fly.

Come to think of it, nymphs have an abusive relationship with me. They're always there waiting and willing. They do what they're supposed to. I show them complete disrespect until I'm desperate. Then I come calling. Sorry, nymphs.

Have any of you guys fished the Delaware River?

Filled with large wild Browns and Rainbows that are almost always rising to massive hatches.
Seemingly a dream come true.
But be prepared to take your lumps there for sure

just kinda funny to think there was an assumption here that I wasn't Euronymphing the whole time.
To extend my analogy, and here I go.. "Well, going around dressed like that, what did you expect? Looks like you deserved it".

Oh, that's one I clearly identified and knew to have nothing to do with. It's the meth-scented trailer park of abusive trout streams.
 
I love Penns, learned to fly fish on Penns and been fishing it for 50 years now. I have a different problem right now. I find myself going and fishing another local stream that tends to give up more trout and is easier to wade at my age. Oh and there are a lot less other fishermen there. I fished Penns in the slot limit water on the opener. I'll get back at some point but I'm enjoying my time on other creeks!
