I'm getting the Salt Water bug

Jay a 9 wt is fine for the bay even a 8 wt is good . As far as line goes you could get away with a DT line . My switch rod is rated as a 9 wt .

Tom never had a chance to try out the drag the snappers put a good bend in my rod but I never felt the need to use the drag since I was using 0x floro .

Dave the ocean side of the island was blowing to good so I went to the other side to the bay it wasn't nearly as bad . It is deffinitely good yak water can't wait till I get mine . I would of waded out farther and try to fish the channel but I was in pants so I didn't want to go any deeper than the boys ;-) I seen tons of bait there mainly big minnows about 4" long and a few baby flounder and a big manhole size stingray swam right by me.

And Fridays are the only good day for me to go plus it beats the crowds .

Fridays are a no go for me. I am now paying the price for taking 4 days off for the jam. I can't take anymore time off.

Maybe we can work something out.

Cool. The concept of a "grand slam" obviously varies with locale but in the FL Keys it is usually implied to mean a bonefish, permit, and tarpon all caught within the same 24 hour period. Sometimes if one gets a snook or red too it can be termed a "superslam." While I've been lucky enough to have caught all the above species, I doubt I'll ever catch a Keys slam, esp FFing (had a few 2 outa 3 days). Frankly, my dream of catching a permit on a fly is one that I quite likely will never achieve. In the meantime, I've had a lot of fun experimenting with crab flies.

Wish I lived closer to salt.

Was pretty close to going on a Tarpon trip this past spring. When speaking with the guide we were going to use he told me he would give us a course the night before we go out- entitled.

"How to survive the first 6 seconds."

This is the types of stuff I love. How fun!

I'm thinking about going back to the Island this Fri . Anyone intrested I have rods to spare :-D The weather and wind look good for fri so far ....

Fred , saltwater fly roddin is something i'm very interested in , how late in the fall can you expect to be able to catch a few?

So I have been told it starts to slow down towards the end of Dec.

In my experience, the best inshore FFing along the NJ coast falls between roughly late Sept (autumnal equinox) and mid Dec. Nov is usually peak. In the last decade or so, the striper season seems to be extending later with catches usually lasting into January but this is a difficult, sporadic, and unpredictable fishery and is mostly a pursued by bait/spin guys. Bluefish are usually gone by early/mid December. There is often a predictable run of large bass in the mid Dec time frame as the herring runs trails down the coast but this run is mostly a boat fishing game and surf/jetty guys like me can't play it since the fish stay out in deeper water. A lot of FFing success at the NJ shore is baitfish driven. For the most part, this includes mullet in the early fall and peanut bunker, sandeels, and rainbait (anchovies) in mid-fall. Usually, by the beginning of Dec this bait migration has passed or shifted out to deeper water. The bigger bunker and herring that migrate later tend to stay further out too. While I have had some great days in early Dec, I rarely visit the shore after the first week or so of the month. Locals who can get there quickly can continue to score later but it's usually not as predictable as previous weeks. And of course, the weather gets tougher. I've been on a few windy jetties in Dec and it's just not much fun unless the fishing is really good.

Thanks for the Info Dave ......
I decided that i'm going to hit Sandy hook instead of IBSP I just found out that its the same drive time from my house. :-D

Good luck Fred. Let us know how you made out. Sandy Hook is a real hotspot and, along with IBSP, are probably the two best known surf fishing destinations along the NJ shore. I haven't been up to SH in a few years. Barnegat is closer for me. SH is also closer to NYC and, although the view of Staten Island is nice at night, the traffic in that part of NJ is awful. Also, SH lacks back water bay areas and jetty access and this is another clincher for me. While the policy may have changed, in the past, one had to walk up to the point if they didn't have a beach buggy permit (about a mile). The fishing up at the point can be fantastic but it's a hike (maybe this has changed). There's an article in the current eastern FFing Magazine about SH.

I fished sandy hook from a boat once. We nailed a few stripers, then the boat blew an engine. We were drifting south at a good clip, so we decided to spend most of the trip back drifting for flounder. Between the flatfish bite and the binocs on the nude beach, we had a good trip.

Go get em fred.

Can one fly fish from the nude beach?

Would one want to?

;)

What does IBSP stand for?

Couple other questions...

I have ordered these 3 from the library.

1. The moon pulled up an acre of bass: a flyrodder's odyssey at Montauk Point by Peter Kaminsky

2. Fly fishing in Saltwater by Lefty

3. In search of a rising tide -a film (dvd) by Jamie Howard

Anyone read/seen them?

Any good?

I watched the rising tide its ok . Its just about how the crazy charlie got invented and a guys quest for the a world record bonefish. I'm not sure about the other books you mentioned

I own this book i'm still reading it but i have learned alot from it so far on reading water

a-kid,
IBSP is Island Beach State Park - a popular public access area along the NJ shore just above Barnegat Inlet.

The Moon Pulled Up an Acre of Bass is a decent read. It's mainly a story of a FFer's summer in Montauk NY and his fishing (and cooking) adventures with noted local guides like Paul Dixon et al. The author (Kaminsky) is the same guy who wrote the FFing for Dummies book.

The rising tide DVD is okay (could be a lot better). It's mainly inerviews with some of the old time Bahamian flats guides. It's worth a watch.
