A couple of years ago I started using a 10 ft 3wt rod and a french coil indicator and picked up an 18" wild brown on a heavily fished NJ stream on the 4th cast. I'm a huge believer in the euro systems.
My rod was horribly tip heavy, in part because I use it with an ultra light 3 wt reel. I ended up taking the rubber cup off the tip of a walking stick, filling it with steel washers, and slipping it over the butt end of my reel seat. Ugly as sin, but it balanced the tip and makes a HUGE difference in my ability to fish effectively. Making sure the tip balance is right is probably the single most important aspect of any nymph setup.
