Great question. I think it was because I had a 3X leader and the rod tip broke as I was landing the fish. It all happened very fast. I didn't know that I had broken the rod until after I landed the fish.
I do remember hearing the "pop/snap" sound and feeling nothing. It was after I released the trout that I knew that I broken my rod.
I think that I was lucky to land the trout at that moment in time. NASCAR drivers always say that it is better to be lucky than good.
I broke this rod tip months ago and it has taken Orvis a while, but they did honor their warranty and I am good to go and will continue to be a customer.
