How Many Vises Do You Have?

Please note spelling, asking about your fly tying hook holders, not about booze and blow 🙂

I have a Renzetti rotary, but thinking of adding in a Regal with midge jaws, just because. I find the Renzettii jaws to be a bit large for smaller flies.

Bigger question, do you have and use more than one vise?

I have the Regal with the midge jaws. Great vise. I tie down to 24s (rarely). I also own a Thompson which I don’t use that much anymore. The Regal is my primary.

one

I own three vises but really only use two...

The first is a Xuron that I tied on for decades before going rotary in the early 2000's. I keep the Xuron on display for sentimental reasons.

Numbers two is the Renzetti Master I bought to replace the Xuron and number three is a Renzetti Traveler that I use to tie on the road.

In regards to tying midges:

Why not just buy midge jaws for your Renzetti?

Absolutely!!!

I have midge jaws for my Master and I tie flies all the way down to size 32 (Tiemco 518) & size 30 (Daiichi 2488) all the time.

I didn't buy midge jaws for my Traveler because I never tie midges on the road, but I am sure I could do the same with Traveler midge jaws.

complicated answer. My main go to is a renzetti traveler rotary 2000.
I have an old renzetti traveler that, inexplicably , the rotary function locked up??? That's boxed away.
I have a Thompson style that came with a tying kit I bought ~45 years ago. I use it for some bass flies from time to time or hold a fly while it dries.
finally, I inherited a old (1960s ?) rotary from my grandfather. Brand unknown. It was the first one I started tying with. I should post a picture of it. I've never seen one like it and someone might have some info. It is not good for flies smaller than 16. He mostly used it to tie blacktail and maribou lead head jigs for lakers and walleye and streamers for trout. Occasionally I tie something on it just for the nostalgia.

I have two vises. The cheap one I started with, and the Griffin I upgraded to. I've never seen a reason to upgrade from my Griffin. I'm going strong on fly tying for 13 years now without ever buying a fancy or expensive vise.

I have a Renzetti Traveler and a few Thompson vintage vises. I use the Thompson 360 a lot with midge jaws and streamer jaw attachments. There's just something that draws me to the Thompsons. I also have a Regal Vise, which I like, but I keep chipping the jaws. I try to be careful, but I guess I'm not. That's what turned me away from Regal.

Too many to count: drinking, over indulging, chasing women, driving too fast, fly fishing buying lottery tickets! I have more vices than any one man should. I also have dyslexia.

Apparently you’re not a fishing enthusiast.

This Law vise is listed at $10,000 on EBay just now. The description says that it is an essential tool for any fishing enthusiast. I’m not that much of an enthusiast either.

The OP really headed that one off at the pass. I had a great response thought out when I saw the title. Shoot.

The early production Regal vise jaws were not properly heat treated and the jaws chipped easily. So if your is one of those early production models it may not be something you’re doing wrong. You could probably get Regal to replace the jaws, but at some point in time the company changed ownership, and the new company does not warranty those older vises, so it might cost you more to do that than your vise is worth.

But I only use a regal with midge jaws.
