Handmade wooden wading staff

Well I did a simple para cord handle wrap. We’ll see how that works.

Beautiful work! I'm going to try this...

Mind if you briefly explain the process? How did you secure the cord to the stick before the wrapping process and how did you finish the tie-off?

Thanks!

Greenghost,
Sorry for the late reply. I just saw your post.
To wrap and secure the para cord, I drilled a hole at the bottom of the wrap and at the top of where I planned to wrap the para cord. I then passed the para cord through the bottom hole and brought that end end up to the top and through the top hole leaving extra length. Then I proceeded to wrap from the bottom up wrapping OVER the end I brought through the bottom hole. Once at the top, I went through the top hole with the other end and simply tied an overhand knot to secure the wrap. Most important is to keep cord really tight as I wrapped it.

So I’ve been spending some time on another wading staff since my outdoor activities are limited by the heat and lack of rain. This one is from a piece of dead Ash. Here’s a few pics.

Well I finished the handle wrap using a piece of flat para cord. That seems to work best because it lays flat when it’s wrapped and water has little effect on it.

Has anyone else used other materials? I’m kinda looking for some ideas. I’ve considered leather shoe lace but I don’t think that would be good when wet.

Nice work!
If you go to Proofflyfishing.com and see the tutorial on Ratan you may like it. Very Nice videos. Also Mulbery root bark and or slippery elm root bark cut into Ratan strips. Honeysukle vine.
I don't have any idea if they'd work but you asked..........

I have been working on a Bamboo cane and waiting staff for several years using extra pieces. I think the bamboo gods will forgive me the nodes will be staggered and not the same culm of bamboo. The staff is a 4 piece and the cane 3 pieces.
