I believe this is a new feature on the PFBC site and is a quantum leap forward for those of us pursuing wild trout and using the Natural Reproductive list PDF to find wild trout streams. Attached is a Google map showing all the streams in PA surveyed by the FBC and found to be supporting wild trout (Class A,B,C,&D).

I guess this is a quantum leap forward for some, and a kick in the groin for all those trying to keep their favorite fishin' hole a secret.

If you can’t view this map from the above link, click on the following link and try clicking on the “FTP download” button

Very cool.

You can click on the streams and get the name. It's still less information than the GIS maps, i.e. it only gives the stream name and not the species, miles, upper and lower limits, etc. But the background map is a whole heck of a lot more user friendly. Better road map and has physical map capabilities is a huge plus.

Thanks! This one's goin on my favorites list.

Thanks for the link afish. Into the bookmarks it is. pcray, can you send me or post a link for the GIS maps. I know I could have run a search on GIS maps but I figured I was here already. Thanks in advance. I wanted to get out on the water this morning but I have a full shed dormer on the back of my home and here 6 or 7 years ago I tore off the old shingles and put down insulation and rubber roofing. Well, I had the leading western edge starting to blow up for some reason so I had to address that. I still may get out and wet a line. We'll see.

thanks this is a big help - choose an area and see what streams are listed, also see if they appear to be on park/public lnad.

That is some awesome technology right there! That will be a real big help. While just quickly clicking away at various stream names, I was thinking of some of the fun it takes away from researching and using maps (topos). I almost felt guilty using that site. Almost. :-D I'm used to it taking some time to obtain info on these wild streams and the PC does it for you in seconds!
I wonder if we're not loosing something along the way when things are made too easy for us? We really are technology dependant anymore, I hope it doesn't come back to haunt us.

Thanks AFish! Some things jump out at you with the visual presentation that you never notice pouring over the old listing...

Being a "Map Freak", I love this stuff. And wouldn't you know that this map has already revealed a couple of things in Chester County previously unknown - at least to me. The PBFC's unnamed tributary to the West Branch of the Brandywine at Modena actually has a name - Dennis Run. Then there is a stream on the map which is not on the "Natural Reproduction List" - Ottown Run near Romansville. Interesting. No further comment.

Typo????? Maybe that's how Rocky Run got on the list. LOL. This would be an interesting typo - a squiggly dark blue line drawn over a tributary to Broad Run which is not on the list but definitely should be. Oh, there is a Broad Run (Tributary to West Valley Creek) on the list, but not this one. This is a tributary to the West Branch of the Brandywine and holds wild browns.

Your squiggly blue line began as data: a list if you will. Unless of course they have started compiling data in the form of squiggly blue lines these days. If the stream name was entered under the wrong county it would be a typo. Bedford-B, Chester-C. Not a far stretch. But maybe its not a typo. If you were playing out your conspiracy theory with a stream with an little more unique name than Rocky Run, you'd already have your answer but I have a feeling there are a few Rocky Runs in Pa.

Wonder why the typo didn't show up in Berks, Blair, Bradford, Bucks, Butler, Cambria, Cameron, Carbon or Centre counties? All are closer alphabetically to Chester than Bedford. Just sayin".......

English,

Is that the Local stream name?

You see i know of a stream called Mollys Run here in Lancaster County that has wild browns. The fish Commission consider it part of Shearers Run even though Molly's is really a trib.

So on their map All of shearers watershed is listed in blue. Im sure thats because they consider it part of Shearers Run. Molly's Run is not on the natural reproduction list.

Lot of us have UNT that the locals have given a name. The PFBC wont recognize that name.

Maybe thats what is happening.

Funny... I zoomed into my county and a black box popped up and said *DEVOID OF ALL TROUT, PLEASE TRY AGAIN LATER*

Oh my God....my most very precious of streams are on there. The ones from my childhood that not one other person I ever met had heard of that didnt live there. :-o
Dont know if its good or bad. Probably dont matter as the gas boys are starting to make offers.

Sal,

I never heard of Ottown Run nor has anyone I know. Fadeaway and I are going to check it out today. However, judging from the location, I doubt access will be easy. Probably not even possible.

Afish,do you know if that type of map eXsts for other states?
Very interesting map, looks like there are no more secret spots ?

Folks speak about "spot burning", but in reality, ALL of the streams on this new map system appear on topos (research). The only real difference is that it names all of the streams AND all of their tribs. Plus, it's at your fingertips.

Gulf,

I looked, and Florida has a wild trout map, but it's blank! :-D

This map is created for/by the PFBC. Try the Florida Fish & game site. They may do a similar thing down there.
