Fly Fishing for Snakeheads and Bowfin success thread

Fish have been good to me lately, this guy waked really hard on my fly so I stopped my fly and let it sit he grabbed the tail with his lips and held it in his mouth for five seconds before he finally sucked the rest in . Seemed like an eternity waiting to finally set the hook .

Serious question to those of you who fish for snakeheads, you're killing all these right? Or have these now become C&R FFO?

Man, you're out there living my dream! I've been fly fishing the Manayunk canal in Philly recently trying real hard to catch my first snakehead, but I can't seem to find them now. I've had them bite frogs on spinner gear but never hook up. Thought a popper on the fly rod might be the ticket but they must not like my presentation or something.

Congrats on the nice fish!

You're a much braver man than I.

I wouldn't touch those fookers with someone else's hands.

Took the plunge and got me a boat . So boat fish only count on the fly now .

Fred - Have been meaning to ask with this current heat spell. How do the snakeheads react to the heat ? Still active in the mornings and evenings or do you notice a significant change in feeding behavior when its this hot out ?

They typically will hit all day but mornings and evenings being the best times .

Caught my new pb today, fish was caught on my snakecharmer fish weighted in at 14 lbs beating my old pb of 13 lbs the length of the fish was 34.5 inches . What a brute .

Nice fish, Fred. I've seen lots of larger snakehead pics that show fish being more of a solid, muted dark color like that. Do they lose their cool pattern some as they grow and age, or is it just the pictures playing tricks on me?

Depends on the color of the water they live in and if them are male or female. The males are the bigger of the two and tend to be darker than the females . I’ve caught allot of black and gold colored ones but most are smaller to mid sized . If the water is clearer then they tend to have that black and gold coloring if the water is stained they are darker in color.

Cool! One day I'd like to catch a meal of them. How close to the Altoona-Johnstown area can you fish them?
