I broke down today and bought a long sleeve, SPF50, button front, collared fishing shirt. On clearance at Walmart for $16.
Really should match up with some Orvis pants but haven't seen them on sale for $20 or less. Now you are set for the next fly fishing show... 😉
Last year $ 20 at Costco.Really should match up with some Orvis pants but haven't seen them on sale for $20 or less.
Rats! I can't stand shopping at our local Walmart. Now I want to.I broke down today and bought a long sleeve, SPF50, button front, collared fishing shirt. On clearance at Walmart for $16.
I bought my first "fancy" collared fishing shirt from Cabela's probably 30 years ago. It was expensive (for me) at $35.00. I like them because they are lightweight and dry very quickly. If I go on a trip in the summer I can wash one in the sink at night and it will be dry the next morning. I like that some of them have a double height collar. You can unfold it to cover your neck. I like the double breast pockets for a couple spools of tippet. They come in a myriad of colors and patterns and they look good. I buy some that I never wear to fish but to go out for dinner in the summer with my wife. Now I rarely buy big name shirts like Simms or Orvis because they are just too damn expensive. I buy all my fishing shirts and pants from Amazon. I like how they look and since I rarely pay more than $40 for one it's a relatively minor price for all the other fly fishing stuff I buy.I'm curious how many folks wear one of those fancy, usually expensive, long sleeve collared fishing shirts? I've seen them sell for as much as $98 at Orvis and L.L. Bean. I just can't see wearing something that nice on a stream where I don't see another fisherman all day. I wouldn't wear one even if I expected to see other fishermen. A t-shirt ($10), with a pocket for my smokes has always gotten the job done for me. Is how you look while fishing important to you? Obviously, there's no right answer. 🙂
Yes, but we must look good too. Pay homage to the quarry. In the spring I wear a tweed sport coat, a Tartan tie and knickers. To be honest guys, I really don't understand the point of this thread. I've been tying and fishing flies for the last 52 years. I've seen it all on the stream. When it comes down to it, I really couldn't give 2 s--ts what you wear on the stream or what flyrod you have in your hand. As long as you have good fishing ethics, respect the land owners, handle the trout well, and don't litter you are OK with me.
That isn't too far off from my look on the water, except I have sunglasses and a dark vest, and Im about 30 years younger.Despite my preference for ball caps, lightweight clothing and no vest, I do admit that deep down, I have a desire at some point in my life to replicate this look:
BTW, anyone recognize this PA angler/author/PA House Member??

I do have that shirt. I had a vest like that back in the 70's but it wore out. If I went this way I'd add a pipe.Despite my preference for ball caps, lightweight clothing and no vest, I do admit that deep down, I have a desire at some point in my life to replicate this look:

We can't see the rod, but I'd go bamboo.
Would this man have been on a radio show in Clearfield County, in the mid-1980s? I recall sitting in my dad's car after killing my first buck, and the only radio station I could pull up on the AM dial was an outdoor show. I can't imagine the local radio station had more than one outdoor talk show. We had a camp at Mahaffey, but I think we hunted in Burnside at the time. I enjoy linking people/places to long-past memories.BTW - The gentleman pictured above is Harris G. Breth of Clearfield, Clearfield County, PA. I know him as a fisherman & author but he had a pretty busy life besides that. His obituary is below:
I hunted that area also in the late 80's. My roommate at Penn State was from Hastings. He used to point out all the sofas on the front porches in Mahaffey. I guess Hastings was upper class compared to Mahaffey! I also have a current friend whose dad is from Mahaffey originally. I wonder how those streams in Northern Cambria and Southern Clearfield are doing? We did well but kept most of what we caught. I know strip mining was taking its toll on some of them.Would this man have been on a radio show in Clearfield County, in the mid-1980s? Our camp was actually a cottage at Mahaffey Conference Grounds outside and across the river from the town proper (building is still owned by my sisters). At the time I mentioned, Dad (a pastor) and I were staying at a parsonage in Barnesboro with family friends. I recall the front porch furnishings being indicative of most of the other villages in the county.I hunted that area also in the late 80's. My roommate at Penn State was from Hastings.
