Fall Fishing = Challenging

The streams are all still at some very low levels now - and you have to be stealthy. You gotta wade carefully and try not to put waves over the fish. Drab clothing is also a plus on low clear water IMO

As for patterns - I still caught quite a few fish on beetles last week on the central PA limestone's.
I also hit some nice BWO hatches - along with a few slate drakes - and saw caddis in the evenings

this is the first fall that my buddy and i really put some time on the water. generally speaking here is what we found:

more bugs than we would have expected to see, not many fish feeding on the surface, about 75% less fish (compared to spring) in hand at the end of the day caught underwater on nymphs and streamers.

we primarily fished the penns and the tully.

what do you guys think about fishing midges in the fall?

Trout will certainly feed on midges in the fall - and almost any time of year for that matter.
However, I always hope to catch them on larger patterns if I can first.
If nothing else is hatching, I will usually even try an ant or a beetle. They often work on fish that are taking midges - or whatever.
But - if everything else fails - then I will go to midges, kinda as last resort
