Delayed Harvest regulations

OK I'm not a purist...I used a green weenie and a san Juan worm today. So there. But scent is bait and bait is illegal in the DHALO areas. And scent is bait.

This is nothing against you TB...its the fish commish that perverted the rules to increase the allowable harvest.

What they should do is allow bait in the DHALO area on June 15 and call it a 2nd opener. Clean em out and get it over with .

Like it or not, technological changes have blended "flies" (including those rubberized forms), lures and bait to the point that clearly making distinctions IMO has become more and more difficult except in the extremes.

Gee thanks for clearing that up Mike

Like it or not....allowing scented baits in a regulation designed to extend the use of stocked trout is counter to the logic behind the regulation (hooking mortality data) used in its original design. Scent causes the fish to hold on longer, swallow and deep hook themselves. It also beings in a class of angler willing to try the regulated area because its easier and their skill level and knowledge of C&R during the closed harvest season is counter productive to the object of the regulation.

Like it or not....like it or not....that line infuriates me...I've heard it at the Big Spring meeting, at Hog Farm public meetings, where the state officials try to shove something down our throats. We beat both of the above mentioned....Like it or not. (deep breath)

Dead ringer of a post Mo.
These baits have gone past "scented" and onto "flavored".
I could swear "no-scent" stips used to be on the old heritage regs.
I always assumed they were on all regs.
Theres that dang word again.

I totally agree Maurice. My point was besides that he never answered the question with a yes or no in the case of scented baits in a DHALO area. Not once did he ever refer to them. I can see where and unscented rubber worm would be allowed but a bait with taste and smell?

Beyond that i remember the use of scent was on that sign. Why has it been removed without announcement of the proposed change?

my opinion on the gulps is......whatever.....if thats how u want to catch fish fine, and you have to put them back anyway..........but if you do have those gulps in your possesion i would say you are going to get alot more lip from a wco than if you were carrying a mepps

I couldn't disagree more.

i was told differently by a wco if its scented you cant use it in dhalo ive seen him give out fines on the loyalhanna the guy was using a mr twister made by power bait and i asked if you was allowed to use those he replied no way

"I couldn't disagree more."JACK M.
Don't know about best but the smartest are the ones that enjoy the sport without caring about being out fished, out geared,or out of date.

well said 🙂

There are a bunch of posts that are upsetting in here. To see so many people that have no care for the streams and fish that are a precious rescorce and not indestructable. I believe that delayed Harvest helps the stream as fish get smarter there are many more holdovers then if everyone keeps all the fish in the first few weeks. Now why would you not want to release that fish to live and catch another day when hes double the size and smarter even yet? Too me that says your the best angler cause your not catching fish that are just learning how to survive in a natural setting your catching fish that live every day in that stream and know whats up. Its upsetting to see so many kill minded anglers and its those anglers that ruin it for the ones who really whole heartedly care about our streams and the fish in them. SUPPORT FF ONLY / NO KILL

jfetkin, I find your comments off-base though not puzzling. In most DHALO streams, the fishery depends entirely on stocked adult trout. Less than 5% of those fish are capable of surviving the Summer. I have always believed that the harvest could be delayed until July 1 on a good portion of those streams, but June 15 isn't a bad compromise. That allows for 2 full months of non-harvest fishing and stretches out the fishery longer than your typical Approved Trout Water with full harvest allowed.

Oops, my bad-- I deleted the final paragraph as I confused this thread with another.

I love to fly fish and for the most part that is what i do but to exclude and alienate folks who choose to fish with spinning tackle artificial or bait only hurts the overall cause in the end, the cause in my opinion being protection of the right to fish and the resource.

Well said.

ive read the "deep hooking" thing in this thread a few times........i have personally never deep hooked a trout while drifting bait or anything else for that matter......whats to say they couldnt swallow a wooley bugger too far......

the guy who originally made the comment to me was reffering to the old sign i guess, i told him they have changed.....he was not happy....but then again why? no matter what you catch them on you cant take them until a certain date anyway.
