I have been trying to tie my crayfish recently with eyes and experimenting with different ones. Melted mono and uv glue has been good but im curious about the durability of them. I recently thought about using pins for the eyes? Ive seen some dry flies like a grasshopper with these kinds of eyes and thought about how else they could be used.

Plastic bead chain...

Not a whole lot of color choices but you can paint 'em.

Usually because I want weight I use regular dark colored dumbbell eyes.

I use the pin heads for the eyes on my crayfish. They seem to be more durable. I can usually find the colors I need if not I can use permanent markers on the white or yellow ones to make the right color.

Are the concerns about durability that the mono will break off at the tip? Or that the mono will pull out from the tie-in point?

When I've made eyes out of burnt mono, I've made both eyes out of one long piece, so I can double the mono over on the shank and anchor it firmly (think like tying in a wire loop for an articulated streamer). That solves the latter concern, I think?

Puglisi crab and shrimp eyes are pretty good.
