So yesterday was the opening day of trout season. We did our tradtional opening day thing and hit a small ATW and tossed live minnows. We caught a bunch and had a great time. Also hit a FFO section and managed 1 nice rainbow, and had a few more hits in the open regs section of the same stream but didn't land any. Streams were pretty low.
Since just about everywhere we went was crowded, low, and had very spooky fish, we decided to escape the opening day crowds and fish warmwater. Went to Tamarack Lake and caught maybe 20 somethin crappie, 2 gills, and 2 perch on small streamers! Fished the lake and the outflow. We were the only ones fishing and had a blast.
This morning we fished the Geneva Swamp where we had great results with crappie last year, but couldn't get even one today. Picked up 2 small bass and headed up the road to another access point to the swamp which we've never been to and found the motherload! Every other cast, and at times every cast brought in a fish. My brother and I were the only ones fishing here also.
The next stop was Lake Wilhelm. Only got 1 crappie, 2 gills, a perch, and a 5 in. largemouth. All on the same white streamer.
Heading back home we stopped at a trib to Shenango Lake to see if the white bass and wiper run started yet. Well, it hasn't. I did get a crappie here also.
Overall I'm pretty happy with this years opening weekend of TROUT season!
